The reasons for exfoliation, well there are a number of benefits to exfoliation. Firstly it improves skin texture, colour and tone, pigmentation, clogged pores, makes for a clearer complexion, reduction in acne breakouts, and reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Exfoliation acts to energise the process by which the body sheds dead skin cells. Your skin is made of dead skin cells being shed on a continual basis, this is a process called desquamation. Younger peoples skin cells complete this process faster than mature people meaning the top cells have been more recently generated and are less dried out.
So by adding a manual aid to this process sluggish activity will be increased, helping the appearance of youthful skin by mimicking the fast cell growth of a younger person. Also by removing dead skin cells at the surface encourages renewed growth at lower levels of the skin. Simply by removing dead skin cells the body responds by speeding up cell generation leading to younger looking skin.
There are several methods of body exfoliation and choosing the right treatment will depend on your skin type.
Here are some of the methods used:
Dry-brush / Loofah or exfoliating gloves this is best for dry skin and sluggish circulation
Exfoliation Scrubs and Salts these are generally used for younger more sensitive skins, as well as dry skin.
Mechanical exfoliation such as Microdermabrasion this treatment is best done by a professional.
There are many types of scrubs on the market today and as they are specific to the face and body it is always advised that specific care is taken. Even though exfoliating is great for your skin it is possible to overdo it, and your skin will tell you if you’ve gone too far.
My two favourite exfoliating products, which I use both in my own skin care regime and in my spa treatments are Secret Spa Organics Gentle Facial Exfoliator and for the body I use Secret Spa Organics Coconut & Rose Sugar scrub. I also use Dead sea salt which is recognised for its excellent detoxifying qualities.
So when exfoliation is done properly by a professional and according to the needs of the client, cell turnover can be achieved and give your skin a healthy and youthful glow. When done correctly, the result is smoother, brighter, and more hydrated skin.
It is always very important after exfoliation to moisturise your skin. Also exfoliation works on your lymphatic system, which speeds up the detoxification process so it is also advised to drink water following a treatment, as this will aid the detoxification benefits.
Another recommendation is that you avoid using exfoliating products with microbeads in as these products contain tiny pieces of plastic which have recently been found to be too small to be filtered by our sewerage systems and are entering our oceans and ending up in our food chain.
